A Day in the Life of... Makan Malaysia
)
First task of the morning?
BREAKFAST! As food lovers, we know we can’t function without a good breakfast. We usually cook something big like fried rice with tofu and veggies, or noodles and dumplings. While eating, we catch up as friends before diving into any work talk. After that, we share updates on what we've been working on and plan out our day.
And just like that, it’s mid-morning already…
Most of our working day is spent in the kitchen. Our business includes catering and foodservice, so we prep for those events and orders. By this time, our food deliveries of vegetables, meat and pantry items have arrived, and we make sure everything’s sorted and stored properly. We find being in the kitchen fun - as well as our “standard” Malaysian dishes like beef rendang and mee mamak (which we will never tire of) we occasionally have different requests from our clients like regional Malaysian dishes we aren’t as familiar or a fusion twist. That’s when we get to test new recipes, which is always fun and delicious!
It’s lunch time!
We don’t usually take a break for lunch since we’re tasting food all day while cooking. If the cooklist is light and we get a little hungry, we’ll reach for something quick and comforting, like spicy instant noodles. We jazz it up with an egg, some veggies, and a sprinkle of crispy garlic and spring onions. We’ll often finish with fresh juice—Mockingbird juices are our current favourite.
Afternoon pick-me up?
By mid-afternoon, our cooking is done, and we start packing orders. We always have a graze table set up with cut fruit, crisps, and any “rejected” baked cookies that didn’t make the cut—perfect for snacking! Packing orders is high-energy, with a strict deadline to meet for collection, so it’s all hands on deck.
It’s time to wind down!
Our goal is to finish and clean up by 6 PM, but with Lunar New Year just gone, our hours have been much later. We’re hoping things will calm down soon, though we’re not sure "sensible hours" exist when you’re running a business?! Weeknight dinners are always quick and easy, like a tray bake, tortelloni, or something prepped over the weekend that just needs heating up. After a long day on our feet, the last thing we want is a complicated meal. We always end the night with a soothing peppermint tea—it’s our way to unwind and
relax before bed.
